Summer is coming to an end and the weather is cooling down. The months leading up to winter weather can be harsh on your skin which can lead to dryness, flakiness, and irritation. To protect your skin barrier during the cold months, here are a few winter skincare tips:
1. Moisturize More Often
- Use a thicker moisturizer: Go for a cream-based moisturizer with humectants and emollients. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides which help keep the skin hydrated and lock in moisture.
- Apply immediately after showering: Moisturize within a few minutes after bathing to prevent your skin from drying out and seal in moisture.
2. Use a Humidifier
- Combat dry indoor air: Heaters can dry out the air in your home which can dry out your skin. Using a humidifier adds moisture to the air, helping to prevent your skin from drying out.
3. Avoid Hot Showers
- Use lukewarm water: While a hot shower may seem enticing in cold weather, hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils which can lead to dryness and irritation. Stick to warm to lukewarm water and limit shower time.
4. Choose Gentle Cleansers
- Avoid harsh soaps and cleansers: Use mild, gentle cleansers with ingredients that having soothing properties like aloe vera and oatmeal. If you have sensitive skin, stick to cleansers that are fragrance free.
5. Exfoliate Gently
- Remove dead skin cells: Exfoliating a couple times a week can help remove dry, flaky skin. However, be gentle and avoid over-exfoliating. Use a chemical exfoliant (AHA, BHA or PHA depending on your skin type) to gently remove dead skin. Use a mild scrub or a soft cloth if you prefer physical exfoliants.
6. Stay Hydrated
- Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated from the inside is just as crucial for maintaining healthy skin.
7. Don’t Skip Sunscreen
- UV protection is needed regardless of weather: Even in fall and winter, UVA rays can penetrate the skin especially with reflective snow. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when outdoors and reapply as needed.
8. Protect Your Lips
- Use lip balm: Lips are especially prone to dryness and chapping in cold weather. Apply a moisturizing lip balm (preferably with SPF) throughout the day to keep them soft and hydrated.
9. Wear Protective Clothing
- Cover up exposed skin: When going outside, wear a scarf, gloves and a hat to protect your skin from cold, harsh temperatures.
10. Limit Alcohol and Caffeine
- These can dehydrate your skin: Reduce your intake of alcohol and caffeine, as both can lead to dehydrated skin. If you need your caffeine, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
These are just some tips to help maintain soft, supple and healthy skin during the colder months!
