What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling involves the delivery of discrete wounds to the skin using a specialized (disposable and motorized) tip with thin needles. The tiny (virtually painless) pricks to the skin’s dermal and epidermal layers serve to stimulate the growth of new collagen and elastin. Recovery is fast – a matter of a few days during which time the treated skin appears pink in color while it is being repaired from within.

Automated microneedling is an innovation in aesthetics for the treatment of the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and the skin’s texture, tone and color.

What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?

Reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. Microneedling can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation as well as uneven skin tone, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks.

What Areas Of The Body Can I Treat With Microneedling?

Microneedling can be used on all parts of the body, including the face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

How Is Microneedling Done?

A sterile tip containing tiny micro-tips is attached to the microneedling pen. Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jessica Kim will apply hyaluronic acid, growth factors or PRP and then select the appropriate treatment pen settings based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What Is The Recovery From Microneedling?

Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total recovery time depends on the pen settings and the number of overlapping passes done. On average, patients are red like a sunburn for 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours. Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jessica Kim will customize a skin care regimen for post treatment to speed up the healing process.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

Microneedling can be performed alone, but a series of 3 to 5 treatments at monthly intervals are recommended to maximize the clinical response. Dr. Kim will determine the best treatment strategy for each individual based on the degree of skin damage and patient concerns.

Can Microneedling Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Microneedling can be combined with other treatments such as laser to further increase clinical benefits. Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jessica Kim can customize a treatment plan based on your skin concern.

What Does Microneedling Feel Like?

At Summit Dermatology, we apply an anesthetic cream prior to treatment to minimize any discomfort. Some patients report the feeling as being similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin.  While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating cartridge tip makes the treatment more comfortable.

How Long Does Microneedling Take?

The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

When Will I See My Microneedling Results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment.
