Sclerotherapy

Spider veins on the legs can be improved by an in-office procedure called sclerotherapy.  This treatment works best to treat the small purple and red broken blood vessels on the legs and thighs.  Sclerotherapy involves injecting these vessels with a small amount of sclerosant solution which irritates the lining of the vessels and causes them to shrink and eventually disappear.  These vessels are not essential and become absorbed by the body in time.

The Sclerotherapy Procedure

Sclerotherapy involves multiple small injections of sclerosant into the vessels.  Most patients report little or no discomfort during the treatment.  After treatment, the vessels will have a bruised and swollen appearance, which can last for two to three weeks.  Sun-exposure to the treatment areas should be avoided during the healing process.  Although daily activities can be resumed immediately, vigorous exercise should be avoided for 48 hours after sclerotherapy.  Compression stockings or support hose will further help clear the veins.  Multiple treatment sessions are typically required for the best results.
