Does a base tan protect skin?
There is no such thing as a safe tan – base tan included. Given that most people leave out sunscreen to achieve a base tan, they are more susceptible to skin damage caused by UV exposure. The best way to prevent sunburn is by applying one or two layers of broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure – and reapply every 2 hours. Sun protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats are additional safe sun practices to protect skin from burning and damage in the summer.
